Fuengirola center & promenade
To be fair, Fuengirola does not have such a beautiful historic center as the old port city of Cadiz or atmospheric Malaga. Yet Fuengirola knows how to seduce many holidaymakers to a holiday because of its versatile character. Now, however, we must not neglect the center of Fuengirola. The Plaza de la Constitucion is certainly worth seeing. This is the main square of Fuengirola. Here you will find, among other things, the wonderful Iglesia del Rosario, or: the Church of the Rosary.
Next to the church, there are also numerous bars, restaurants and terraces in the square, as well as the Monumento a las Tres Generaciones (Monument to the Three Generations). You don't have to struggle to find the Plaza de la Constitution. It is close to the marina, the Bioparc and the bullring. Activities and events are often organized on the square. So there is something to do all year round.
In addition to wandering through the center, it is also wonderful to walk along the boulevard El Paseo Maritimo Rey de España. The boulevard starts at the Sohail castle and ends at Carvajal in the east. and with a length of eight kilometers, Fuengirola's boulevard is even the longest in Spain. On the boulevard there are - in addition to beaches - an unprecedented amount of souvenir shops, cozy bars and kiosks with all kinds of delicacies.
Fuengirola also has beautiful beaches. Characteristic of the seven golden yellow beaches is the fact that they have a blue flag. This is the international symbol for clean, safe and child-friendly beaches. The most beautiful beach is perhaps Playa El Ejido, also known as Playa del Castillo, or: the castle beach. It is not difficult to guess how this beach got this name. Just behind the beach is the Castillo de Sohail, built on a hill; a Moorish fortress and castle in one.
El Castillo beach is accessible for the disabled and has all the facilities you could wish for. You will find chiringuitos, taps, toilets and a kayak and pedal boat rental. Opposite Playa del Castillo is another, quieter beach; Santa Amalia. The beaches are connected by a bridge. Planning to go to Playa del Castillo? Be sure to visit the castle itself. Adults and children who are more adventurous can zip line from the hill near the castle and climb the castle wall.
Another popular beach is Playa de San Francisco. This beach is located right next to the marina and has a length of 350 meters. The good facilities, the location near the boulevard and the gently sloping beach make it a popular choice among families. Adults also like Playa de los Boliches, known as the finest beach in Fuengirola. You can rent sunbeds with a parasol here, but also a hammock. How relaxing is that?
However, these are not the only beaches in Fuengirola. For example, Playa de Torreblanca is a good choice for families and Playa de Carvajal where the Costa Water Park is also located. Finally, you have Playa de las Gaviotas, located outside the center. It can get very busy in the summer on this two kilometer long beach.
Fuengirola sights & tips what to do
The Moors have ruled Andalusia for centuries, something that can still be seen in Fuengirola today. They expand the originally Roman settlement in the 11th century and decided to build the castle Sohail. Unfortunately, the city was destroyed by fire in the late Middle Ages, forcing the inhabitants to seek refuge in nearby Mijas.
It was not until the 17th century that a village formed again, this time inhabited by fishermen. In the 1960s, Fuengirola then grew into one of the largest seaside resorts on the Costa del Sol. Despite the city's focus on tourism, traces of its turbulent history can still be admired. However, Fuengirola also knows how to offer entertainment in other areas.
Sohail Castle
Although Fuengirola is known for its sandy beaches, the castle of Sohail is the symbol of the city. The castle is located on a hill next to a river and offers sublime views over both Fuengirola and the sea. The climb to the freely accessible castle is well worth it, although there is also a train to the castle. Once you arrive at the Castillo de Sohail, you can marvel at the view and stroll along the walls.
The castle now forms an open-air auditorium where events, concerts and other festivities are held. The main music event is the Mare Nostrum Fuengirola which takes place throughout the summer. There is also a medieval market in August. The opening hours of Castillo de Sohail vary. Therefore, consult the castle's website before departure.
Archaeological Sites
In addition to an imposing castle, Fuengirola also has two archaeological sites: the Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca del Sol. The first site shows a grand Roman villa from the first century AD. Here you can admire a salt factory, a pottery and some thermal baths. An important find was also made here; the famous Venus of Fuengirola was excavated here.
Although the Torreblanca del Sol is currently not open to the public, we will name this site of Roman baths. The baths date from the second century AD and only came to light in the twentieth century. In addition to the baths that were part of a thermal complex, parts of a salt factory and a necropolis (large cemetery) have also been found here. It is not yet clear when the 'Thermal Baths of Torreblanca' will be on display.
Miramar shopping center
If you can't get enough of shopping, Fuengirola is the place to be. The city has one of the largest shopping centers on the Costa del Sol, Miramar. Nevertheless, highly recommended for families with children.

On Tuesdays (08:00 - 14:00 / 15:00) the weekly market of Fuengirola takes place on the Feria site. In addition to clothing and fresh fruit and vegetables, many local products can also be found here. Both tourists and locals know where to find the largest market on the Costa del Sol, so expect crowds. In addition to the weekly market on Tuesday, there is also a flea market on Saturday.
If you go on holiday to Fuengirola, you should definitely spend an afternoon at Mijas. This village is located on a rocky plateau above Fuengirola and is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Andalusia. Wonderful are the white buildings with Arabic structure, the cobbled streets and the many red flowers in blue pots. Wander around to get a good impression and make a stop at the small bullring, the old Arab wall and the Santuario de la Virgen de la Pena. Be sure to sit down at one of the cute cafes to recover from all the impressions!
